The MyCancerJourney Difference

We are private advocates. While most healthcare systems, insurance companies, and nonprofits offer nurse navigators, care coordinators and advocates, our private advocates are different in that their responsibility is solely to the member, rather than an institution. This means our advocates provide whole person support to meet each member’s personalized needs. They are not time constrained. They can truly focus on the member and dedicate the time needed to support their medical, emotional, financial, social and caregiver needs.

With MyCancerJourney, each member is paired with a dedicated advocate who can ensure their voice is heard and their goals are respected throughout their care. While they don’t offer clinical advice, they do assist with everything from understanding the care plan to coordinating the practical aspects of daily life, like childcare, transportation, and other essential resources, so the members can focus where they most need to.

All of our advocates are PACB-certified, have extensive oncology experience, and are supported by a diverse board of clinical experts. Plus, MyCancerJourney provides lifetime membership, supporting members through every stage of their cancer journeys.

Here are some ways our advocates can help:

Fully understand the diagnosis

Our advocates are fluent in healthcare jargon. They can act as oncology translators and make sure the member really understands every facet of their diagnosis, pathology reports, prognosis, treatment options, and the side effects associated with each treatment.

Define and articulate goals and preferences for care

Everyone’s goals for care are different. A “good outcome” means something different to everyone. Our advocate can help the member articulate what’s most important to them, and ensure the care team knows what they do and do not want. This is their unique journey. MyCancerJourney makes sure the member has an active voice in every care decision along the way.

We are here to advocate for the member. We are treatment agnostic. Our goal is for the member to make the decisions are right for them.

Make informed treatment decisions

Whether the member is newly diagnosed, in disease progression, or experiencing a recurrence, their MyCancerJourney advocate can help ensure their voice is heard and support them in true shared decision-making.

The goal of shared decision-making is to ensure care decisions consider your values, preferences, and circumstances, as well as clinical evidence, in conjunction with the healthcare provider’s knowledge and experience. The advocate ensures the member is fully informed and has a voice in their care throughout their journey.

Find the best care and support

The advocate can help direct members to specialists and specialized health centers in their area, and discuss if a center of excellence is right for them. They can help find a second opinion or with enrollment in a clinical trial, when necessary. Additionally, they can recommend functional medicine doctors, palliative care providers, and nutritionists to help manage and alleviate side effects.

Connect with the needed resources

The advocate can connect members to the services and resources they need, including financial, emotional, and social support. These may include medical financial counselors, specialized counselors or social workers, support groups, and nonprofits. Our advocates can also help members understand the insurance benefits available to them and direct them to the right person at their insurance company, streamlining the process and ensuring they can make the most of your coverage.

How to talk about the diagnosis

Cancer is emotional for both members and their loved ones. Sometimes the conversations with loved ones, friends, and coworkers can be the most difficult. Our advocates can help prepare and coach them through these conversations about their diagnosis, treatment goals, boundaries, and requests for support.

Craft a plan for the future

Our advocates are with members for the long haul. The advocate can help the member map this journey from beginning to end. Cancer changes everything. They can help them navigate their new normal and let them know what to expect going forward, be that returning to work and/or resuming other daily activities.
